San Jose
San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica is home to some of the very best museums including the National, the Gold, the Jade, the contemporary art and the children’s museum. Also worth seeing is the National Theatre which was built at the end of the XIX Century after all of the sections were shipped over from Europe to Limon and then carried to San Jose through the jungle by train.

Volcan Poas
Drive along the windy roads of the central valley to reach the Poas Volcano, through coffee plantations, fields of strawberries offering amazing views of the countryside while passing several waterfalls cascading down from the Poas Volcano National Park. The deep blue waters of the crater contrast with the dense tropical forest that surround it, the geysers are active and exhale clouds of sulphurous smoke. Walk through the luxurious forest to the second lagoon, a beautiful emerald lake of cold water. The park measures 5,600 hectares and stands at an altitude of 2,708 meters (8,200 feet) above sea level.
Volcan Irazú
Just 90 minutes south of San Jose is the Irazú Volcano National Park which covers 2309 hectares. Striking green coloured waters fill the crater which is surrounded by brilliantly coloured mineral pools and scorched trees, which give the effect of being on the moon. From the highest point; 3,432 meters above sea level (10,300 feet) above the clouds there is a spectacular view of the mountains, valley and the cities of San José and Cartago below.
Sarchí
Close to San Jose is the small craft-village of Sarchí. The ideal place to buy souvenirs, this is where the famous colored ox cart is made. Declared as a national symbol of labour it had a very important role in the social and economical development of the country. Brightly painted with lots of colours and original designs the ox cart has become a decorative souvenir. You can also find hammocks, paintings and other wooden handmade delights.
