Home to the colonial city of Granada, lagoons, volcanoes, nature reserves and the traditional village of Masaya, with so many unique places within close proximity it is easy to see why this zone is the most visited in the country.
Laguna de Apoyo
This lagoon is an old volcanic crater and was formed by volcanic rocks. The volcano became inactive thousands of years ago and was then filled by rain water, creating the biggest volcanic lake in Nicaragua.
Warm crystalline water surrounded by exuberant vegetation, in this lagoon you can take a refreshing swim or practice aquatic sports. The small town of Catarina which sits on the lagoon has impressive and unforgettable views.
Granada
The oldest city in the western hemisphere and the most beautiful in Nicaragua, Granada is the perfect location for admiring and appreciating the pre-Columbian colonial architecture. Tour around the city in a horse drawn carriage and discover old attractive churches, the cathedral, an old convent and the traditional Spanish style central plaza.
Just outside of the city is Lake Nicaragua, the largest lake in the country and home to the beautiful famous “las isletas” which were created after a volcanic eruption. Home to many types of bird these islands are easily accessible by boat.
Also in the lake is Zapatera island, an important archaeological site with remaining Indian artefacts; petroglyphs, altars and other stone sculptures.
Masaya
Known as the best shopping destination in the country, this city has an overflowing colourful artisan market.
The Masaya Volcano National Park is one of the most beautiful and interesting natural phenomenon’s in Nicaragua. An area of 54 km² and more than 20km of picturesque roads that leads you around two impressive volcanoes and 5 incredible craters, among them is the still active Santiago, The canopy tour is outstanding here offering superb views of the volcanoes.
San Juan de Sur
On the pacific coast close to the border of Costa Rica you will find San Juan de Sur, a fisherman’s paradise. With shallow bay waters, spectacular snorkelling sites can be found here as well as deserted white beaches to relax on. Further up the coast are great spots for surfing.
