PANAMANIAN AIRLINE DECLARED "BEST IN THE REGION"

Panama's Copa Airlines has been selected for the second consecutive year as the best airline in Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean in a survey conducted by SkyTrax, a British marketing research company.
The airline’s cabin crew also received the "Best on-Board Service" Award, surpassing respondents’ expectations in such areas as service efficiency, cabin appearance, customer service, courtesy and speaking ability, among others.

The SkyTrax research is the largest global survey of airline passengers, who vote on product quality and customer service. The study is based on more than 12 million responses from passengers from 94 nations.

"We are very pleased that we have earned this important recognition for the second consecutive year," said Jorge Garcia Icaza, Commercial Vice President of Copa Airlines. "This honor, which demonstrates Copa’s leadership in the region’s airline industry, stems from our policy of continuous improvement, our employees’ hard work and their focus on excellence -- all of which translate to passenger preference."

Copa Airlines was founded in 1947 and currently offers approximately 80 scheduled flights per day to over 30 destinations throughout the Caribbean and North, Central and South America.

GALLEON WITH RICHES WORTH $50 MILLION FOUND OFF OF THE PACIFIC COAST

Scientists, divers and historians of the National Cultural Institute of Panama have found a sunken galleon dating from the Spanish Conquest carrying cargo valued at $50 million, this 17th century galleon was found about 60 miles south-east of Panama City, Panama.

The ship, named San José sank on June 17, 1631, in the Pearl Islands archipelago. Chartered by the Spanish Crown, the San Jose was carrying precious metals taken from churches, tombs and mines from Peru and Bolivia. A docking log book from that era has indicated that the ship was carrying at least 700 tons of gold on board.

During the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, Panama served as the central point for gold and silver shipments between the mines of Peru and imperial Spain. Galleons laden with treasure were off-loaded in Panama City and transported across the country in the thick dense jungle by train in order to be set onto the ships on the Caribbean coast heading for Spain.
